Poinsettia Care: History, watering & environment

poinsettia care

Did you know…

The first Poinsettias were introduced to the United States in 1825? They were brought by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico who obtained the plants from the wilds of southern Mexico. The common name for the classic holiday plant was derived from his last name.

Caring for your Poinsettia:

Examine the plant’s soil daily. When the surface is dry to the touch, water the soil until water flows freely out the drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Do not leave the plant in standing water – overly wet soil prohibits air flow which causes root injury.

Poinsettias that are exposed to high light and low humidity require more frequent watering. If wilting occurs, water with the recommended amount and repeat after five minutes.

To keep the plant in bloom, try to maintain its environment at 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit during daylight hours. If possible, move to a cooler place a night. Avoid exposing the plant to hot or color drafts which may cause premature leaf drop.

Recommended watering practices are as follows:

Pot Diameter     Fluid Oz.

4”                     6 oz.

6”                     12 oz.

8”                     20 oz.
